Adele supports well-funded bulk billing GP service for Fremantle
There has been a lot of misinformation spread about the future of the Fremantle Hospital GP Clinic. I know how important the service is to Fremantle locals. I agree that a well-run and well-funded bulk billing service is needed. The GP Clinic pays no rent at the clinic and its cleaners are paid for, but unfortunately despite their best intentions, the doctors at the Clinic have struggled to cope with the demand which has led to two-to-three week delays in being seen.
I met with the Health Minister, Dr Kim Hames, last year to discuss the issue having already met with Dr Trenna Turner. Dr Hames has confirmed the Government’s intentions to retain the service, recognising the invaluable role it plays in reducing pressure on the Emergency Department at the Fremantle Hospital.
I sought a commitment again in March 2012 from the Minister and have been assured that the service will not in fact close down; rather, there will be a transition to a new provider. I am hopeful that this will result in a well organised, well-funded service that will cater for its many patients. Please click on the links below to see the letter I wrote to the Health Minister in February 2011, the response I received from him, and the Minister’s clarification in Parliament in March 2012 about the future of the service.
