Magellan’s lead exports stopped in Freo
Adele’s office monitored and reported the mounting evidence of licence breaches to the EPA over two years. Magellan finally halted exports in April 2011 and placed its Wiluna mine into care and maintenance. Adele says she will only support Magellan exporting lead in solid ingot from through Fremantle, as this removes the risk of lead dust being released into the community.
Magellan Metals gained notoriety for its role in contaminating Esperance with toxic lead carbonate in 2006-7, killing thousands of birds and costing taxpayers millions in a cleanup that still continues. Adele has been outspoken about Magellan’s attempts to export lead carbonate through Fremantle Port since exports commenced in September 2009.
