Rejection of Iron Ore Proposal

I welcome the Government’s rejection this week of a proposal to ship iron ore through Fremantle. The port of Fremantle is a busy container port, but a line needs to be drawn at it becoming a port for bulk export of minerals, such as iron ore. Demand for iron ore has put a strain on regional ports, but looking to export through the highly residential metropolitan area is not the solution. While there have been advances in dust suppression technology, there is still the risk of red iron ore dust being released into surrounding areas, particularly when the Fremantle doctor is blowing.
