Media Release: Fremantle Greens candidate Adele Carles to address Fremantle Markets ‘Rally for Richard’
When: 5pm, Wednesday, 22 April 2009
Where: Fremantle Council Chambers steps, Kings Square (opposite Myers)
Richard Murphy, a market stallholder for 22 years, has just been evicted under the new controversial Fremantle Markets Lease, signed by the City of Fremantle 10 months ago. Many other stallholders are also leaving due to crippling rent increases. A valuation released this week found that that the new rents are now the most expensive in Australia (with the exception of the large Paddy’s markets in Sydney).
“Richard challenged unfair terms that were presented to him on a ‘take it or leave it basis’, including an extraordinary 90 per cent rent increase,” Greens candidate for Fremantle Adele Carles said.
“He has just lost his case in the State Administrative Tribunal, demonstrating that this lease does not protect stall holders’ rights.”
“The City of Fremantle has mismanaged this lease. “
“Mayor Peter Tagliaferri used his deciding vote in favor of big business at the expense of long-standing stall holders.”
“As the Greens candidate for Fremantle, I am investigating avenues for an urgent State Government inquiry into this fiasco and will be speaking about what has happened at the rally today.”
