Media Release: GREENS CALL ON PLANNING MINISTER TO INTERVENE AT SOUTH BEACH, BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE
Adele Carles, Greens candidate for Fremantle and long time South Beach campaigner, is calling on the Planning Minister John Day to meet her at South Beach to see for himself the destruction of the dunes by developer Stockland at South Beach.
Adele Carles wants to discuss with the Minister outstanding problems at South Beach, caused by Labor’s sloppy approvals process.
“We are appalled to see what Stockland has done to our public beach,” said Ms Carles. “It has removed the coastal cycle path, destroyed the dunes and bulldozed through all of the remaining coastal vegetation. The coastal cycle track was due to be reopened in December 2008 and is now well overdue for immediate reinstatement.”
The Greens are calling on the Planning Minister to take charge of this planning mess to salvage what he can for the public.
“Stockland plans to run a road through the small beach carpark – leading to further increase in traffic on the tiny access road – the Minister needs to revisit this decision on public safety grounds,” Ms Carles concluded.
Adele Carles will be available for interview in front of the Stockland development at the South Beach car park at 11.15am on Wednesday 22 April.
