“The decision by Environment Minister Bill Marmion to uphold the EPA’s rejection of a coal mine proposal near Margaret River provides much needed certainty for the people of Margaret River.

The Government has sent a clear message to industry that coal mines are not welcome in the region and that any future pursuance of approvals would be a waste of time and money.

The South West can continue to be the beautiful tourism region that it is now without the risk of becoming a coal province.”

Urgent Funding Needed for John Curtin College of the Arts

“I am urging the State Government to support a much needed injection of funding for John Curtin College of the Arts. John Curtin is the only selective Arts College in WA and the premier public school in Fremantle offering Gifted and Talented Education programs (GATE).

”I would like to see the quality of the buildings and the technological resources match the outstanding and progressive education programs that are being implemented by the staff at John Curtin College of the Arts. These programs require modern technology such as editing and television studios, rehearsal space, recording studios and new science laboratories.”

Moratorium needed on fracking

“I support the call of the National Toxics Network (NTN) for federal and state governments to implement a moratorium on the use of drilling and fracturing chemicals (‘fracking chemicals’) used in coal seam gas and shale gas extraction, until these chemicals have been fully assessed for their health and environmental hazards by the Australian industrial chemicals regulator, the National Industrial Chemical Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS).”

On the eve of his retirement from Fremantle Council, friends and supporters gathered at my office to show our appreciation for John Dowson who has worked tirelessly for Fremantle.

John will be sorely missed on Council – you cannot replace his Fremantle corporate memory, heritage knowledge or experience.

John has so much more to contribute to Fremantle’s future, soI hope he will continue to play an active role in our community.
